Learn the art of Ebru and Water Marbling by designing your choice of special papers, scrap packs, puzzles or wood coasters and shapes!
Water marbling is one of the most relaxing and satisfying forms of art in the world. Originating in Turkey in the 13th century, the craft of floating paint on top of water thickened with a seaweed mixture was nearly lost during the industrial revolution. However, the art of Ebru was saved by those who dared to reveal the secrets of their mastered techniques in an effort to not 
lose the craft altogether. There are several key elements to creating authentic Ebru – the mordant to help the paint adhere to the material (paper, fabric, wood, etc.), the seaweed used to thicken the water to allow the paint to float on top, and the paint itself, mixed with ox gall to help it spread across the water. The final element is the process of dropping the colors on top of the water and then creating various designs. The original ebru art used watercolor, but since acrylic paint was developed in the 1950s, the art has adapted to this more permanent color medium.
We have a multitude of vibrant acrylic paint colors, and we use stylus needles to create swirls, and combs and rakes to create dazzling designs that are as fun to watch as they are to create.
Select from a variety of wood shapes – 2 wood coasters with cork bottoms. and choose up to 4 additional wood shapes to paint!
Artistic skills not required. An art apron, gloves and all other supplies are included to create a beautiful work of art. As always, wear your favorite clothing to paint in! Until further notice, all participants must wear masks for the duration of the class for the protection of each other. Disposable masks will be available on site for $5 each.
No paint brushes will be used or harmed during this process. No straight lines will be drawn. 🙂
