Day Art for Kids – Resin Art on Tuesday, July 28, 2020

Geodes geodes geodes!
This workshop is recommended as a 2 day workshop, but can be done in one day if needed. Numerous aspects of the process will be condensed or eliminated to meet the time constraints.

Below is an outline of the activities we’ll do in both days of the workshop to help create a most unique yet realistic geode slice.

Day 1

• We’ll get started by creating our own geode slice forms using silicone. This helps give us a reservoir into which we can pour our resin. You will check all edges to make sure you have a nice seal with the plastic below.
• While the silicone is curing, we will begin the process of growing our own crystals that we will add on Day 2. Yes, you will grow your own crystals!
• Finally, you will decide on a color scheme for your geode, it can be purple, blue, coral, gold, green, pink, etc.
• You will mix your colors with the resin to pour into the free-form silicone reservoir, checking carefully for leaks. If you do find a leak, you may need to add more silicone and monitor.
• Time permitting, you may add another ring of color, as desired.
• We will then leave the geode to cure and be ready for Day 2 next Tuesday!

Day 2

• First we’ll unearth the crystals that we grew
• Next we carefully place the crystals in the geode center and in the interior rings
• We will mix additional colors and gently pour into reservoir to create a realistic geode slice. This step may be repeated until finished.

As with our many of our other classes, unskilled artists can enjoy this project with a success, and skilled artists will appreciate the opportunities for their creative input.

Using the as the free-form mold created by our artists, we guide you through the steps of mixing your paint colors and pouring into your mold space, then adding crystals and finally a top coat. This project is part art, part science and part math, and to us, it’s all parts fun!  No two pieces will look alike.

Your geode will be fun to look at and talk about for years to come!

An art apron, gloves and all other supplies are included to create a beautiful work of art. As always, wear your favorite clothing to paint in! Until further notice, all participants must wear masks for the duration of the class for the protection of each other. Disposable masks will be available on site for $5 each.

We might choose to use a small craft paint brush in this project to clean up the edges, but no straight lines will be drawn. 🙂
